Video trends that will dominate 2020

As human beings we love to hear and learn from stories. A natural storytelling medium, consumers respond better to videos than almost any other type of content out there. With visual, interactive, and entertaining elements, videos give much more information to the consumer, changing the way in which we engage with brands.

With 75% of millennials watching at least one video a day according to a Hubspot study, videos are helping with brand engagement and sales. In fact, 64% of consumers claim that marketing videos have had an impact on their purchasing decisions – making videos an important digital marketing tool in 2020. And if that’s not enough proof of how videos are set to dominate,  here are few more fun facts:

  • More than 8,000 million videos are viewed on Facebook every day.
  • Story ad videos have increased the impact of ads, purchase intent, message associated, and CTR.
  • Sponsored videos on Instagram generate 3 times more comments than sponsored photo.
  • YouTube’s 6-second ads generate an increase in brand messages of more than 30%.

Top trends that will dominate 2020

1. Live streaming

According to Forbes, live videos on Facebook and Instagram keep your audience watching three times longer than recorded ones. More brands will use live videos for marketing in 2020 because it creates a feeling of talking directly to the viewer.  More authentic than pre-recorded videos, live videos encourage engagement as viewers expect their questions or comments to be answered in real time.

Today, brands use live videos to showcase:

  • New products
  • Demonstrations
  • Webinars
  • Ask question and answer sessions
  • Interviews

Live videos are simple to use,  free, and don’t require any editing or postproduction work. And with more and more social platforms offering  live video functions such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and most recently LinkedIn – you can expect live streaming to only grow in 2020.

2. Video podcasts

A video podcast or a videocast is simply doing a podcast on video. You can show what happens and who is behind the microphone. This will give your users closeness to the brand and it will help you connect better with your audience.

3. Portrait videos

We spend a lot of time-consuming content on our mobile –  much more than on other devices such as our computers or tablets. So, it’s logical that we produce videos in vertical format to fit to our mobile devies.

This trend has been marked by Instagram and Snapchat with their format of stories. With Instagram already launching their IGTV (Instagram Television) tool allowing vertical videos of 15 to 60 minutes. This tool opens the possibility for companies to do the same with a YouTube channel, only in vertical format.

4. Shoppable videos

Many consumers rely on product reviews or video serving platforms before making a purchase decision. Shoppable videos can make this journey short and sweet.  Consumers will start using shoppable videos as a direct way to reach product pages and make purchases. A shoppable video allows users to click on a hyperlink and go directly to the online shopping process.

5. 360-degree VR videos

360-degree videos make users consume content in a very immersive, interactive and real way. It is increasingly being used in video marketing strategies and in 2020 it will grow even more with the launch of Facebook’s Horizon, a virtual reality social networking platform. This type of format is especially interesting for the travel or event sectors. A great example is the use of these 360º videos by National Geographic.  You can read more about the launch of Facebook’s new platform here.
