Quick answer
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of structuring web content so AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews — can extract and cite it cleanly when users ask questions. It extends classical SEO with Quick Answers, FAQ schema, citable statistics, and freshness signals that raise extraction quality.

WHAT IT IS

AEO overlaps with classic SEO but optimizes for a different surface: generative-model extraction rather than blue-link clicks. The core artifacts are short, self-contained answer blocks; declarative question-and-answer pairs with FAQ schema; entity-first prose; and authoritative citations that give a model confidence to quote the page.

HOW IT WORKS

Pages are written with a 40–80 word 'Quick Answer' immediately under the H1, a clean H2/H3 map that mirrors user questions, structured data (FAQPage, Article, DefinedTerm, Organization), named authors and methodology, and outbound links to primary sources. AI crawlers weigh freshness, citation density, and schema completeness when deciding what to lift.

WHEN TO USE

Apply AEO to every page where a user might ask an AI engine 'what is X?' or 'who does Y?' — including service pages, insight articles, glossary entries, and case studies.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the discipline of structuring web content so AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews — can extract and cite it cleanly when users ask questions. It extends and partly replaces classical SEO.
How does AEO differ from traditional SEO?
SEO optimizes for ten blue links: title tags, backlinks, and relevance signals. AEO optimizes for extraction: short Quick Answers near the top of the page, explicit question/answer structure, schema markup, citable statistics, and publication dates so the engine trusts the content is current.
What content formats earn the most AI citations?
Listicles and comparison tables earn the highest citation rates in public studies (74%+ of AI citations come from list-format content). Explicit FAQ blocks, numbered lists, definition-first paragraphs, and pages with a clear methodology section outperform long-form essays on citation frequency.
What schema markup does AEO require?
At minimum: FAQPage for Q/A content, Article for editorial work, DefinedTerm for glossary entries, ItemList for rankings, and Organization + WebSite at the site level. Author + datePublished + dateModified are non-negotiable for E-E-A-T weighting.
How does NUUN Digital treat AEO in client work?
Every page we ship leads with a 40–80 word Quick Answer block and includes FAQ schema, author credentials, and last-updated timestamps. We treat ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Copilot as named audiences with their own extraction rules.
