WHAT IT IS
A modern reporting stack pairs a cloud warehouse or lakehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift) with transformation tooling (dbt), a semantic/metric layer (Cube, dbt Semantic Layer, LookML, Metriql, Microsoft Fabric), a BI frontend (Looker, Power BI, Tableau, Metabase, ThoughtSpot), and observability (Monte Carlo, Soda, Anomalo). The semantic layer is the linchpin — it's where 'revenue,' 'active user,' and 'churn' are defined once and reused everywhere.
HOW IT WORKS
The objective is that any stakeholder, asking a standard business question, gets the same answer — no matter which dashboard or analyst they ask. Without that, leadership meetings derail on definition disagreements instead of decisions.
WHEN TO USE
Invest in reporting infrastructure when multiple teams disagree on basic numbers, when spreadsheet sprawl is compounding, or when audit/regulator scrutiny requires defensible lineage and controls.
